The annual “Blues on the Green” concert series at Zilker Park occurs Tuesday, Aug. 5 and Wednesday, Aug. 6 from 7:00-10:00 PM. This event has a significant impact upon our neighborhood, so you may want to review the information below provided by the City of Austin and plan your travel accordingly.

On Sunday, August 3, neighbors may notice signs within the neighborhood to discourage event parking as shown on the attached map.  Ticketing and towing will be enforced only during Event Days within Event Hours.

The 97th annual Zilker Kite Festival will be held this Saturday, April 5 from 10 AM to 5 PM at Zilker Park. The City Office of Special Events has provided road closure information on their web site along with a road closure map to help you plan your navigation accordingly.

Neighborhood NO PARKING restrictions are in effect. Signed “no parking areas” are actively enforced on the event day.

The Trail of Lights is a treasured Austin tradition that delights thousands of children and adults alike during the holiday season. Since the event is held in nearby Zilker Park and involves intermittent nightly closure of Barton Springs Road from Dec. 10 through Dec. 23, it impacts our neighborhood significantly.

The City has worked closely with our Neighborhood Association to address resident concerns including neighborhood parking, access to the Park and Barton Springs pool, and increased traffic on our residential streets.

The Emergency Preparedness Committee of the Barton Hills Neighborhood Association (BHNA) will sponsor a Wildfire Safety Class, led by the Austin Fire Department, in the Parish Hall of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, 2128 Barton Hills Dr., on Saturday, October 5, 2024 from 10:30 until 1:00.  The class will be followed by lunch in the room, provided by BHNA.  Then the group will visit two nearby properties for a practical application of the lesson.  We will aim to be finished by 3:00.

The following information was provided by the City of Austin and C3 Presents to help our neighborhood prepare for the upcoming Austin City Limits Music Festival:

ACL Music Festival will take place over two consecutive weekends: Friday, Oct. 6th through Sunday, Oct. 8th; and Friday, Oct. 13th through Sunday, Oct. 15th, from noon to 10 PM on Friday, and 11 AM to 10 PM on Saturday/Sunday.

The event will significantly affect area traffic conditions and public recreational use of the park on both load in/out and event days. Neighborhood NO PARKING restrictions are in effect. Signed “no parking areas” are actively enforced only on event days (Friday, Saturday, and Sunday). The ACL Festival web site offers extensive information about transportation to/from the event.

Azie Morton (between Barton Hills Drive and Barton Springs Road) will be closed from 11 AM to 11:59 PM each day of the festival. Barton Springs Road through Zilker Park will be closed starting Thursday at 8 PM until 11:59 PM on Sunday, both weekends. No vehicular traffic will be allowed on Barton Springs Road from South Lamar to Sterzing from 9 PM to 11 PM both weekends.  For load in/out Barton Springs Road will have varying lane closures on Saturday, Sept. 30 and Monday, Oct. 2 through Thursday, Oct. 5 and Monday, Oct. 16 through Wednesday, Oct. 18.

Barton Springs Pool is open at all times during normal hours. During Festival days parking is protected at the south gate lot off Azie Morton Rd. for pool swimmers. In addition, Auditorium Shores will be open at all times for general and off-leash use.

The BHNA spring Picnic in the Park is back!

Sunday April 30, 3:00 – 5:00 PM (postponed from Sunday April 23 due to weather), at the Barton Hills Community Park adjoining the school. Pack a picnic, beverages, a blanket and maybe a thing or two to share, and join us. For the kids and those of us adults who love field games, we’ll have a water balloon toss, egg race, and three-legged race.

We’ve scheduled a special meeting of the Barton Hills Neighborhood Association on Tuesday February 28, 2023 at 7:00 PM in the fellowship hall at St. Mark’s to discuss the proposed Zilker Park Vision Plan, and consider and vote on the attached resolution. Please plan to attend if you can.

This is a huge issue that has the potential to affect everyone in the neighborhood, regardless of whether or not you use Zilker Park on a regular basis. Our discussion got off to a good start at our January meeting, but we didn’t have enough time to cover everything, and we also didn’t have a resolution prepared yet. Larry Akers and David Weinberg have been hard at work since then, and the attached draft is the product of their efforts.

Please review it, discuss it, and comment on it here. We realize there are a lot of diverse opinions on this subject but hope we can reach a consensus that will provide feedback to the planners that will reflect what is important to as many of us as possible.

We don’t call special meetings very often, but the Vision Plan is currently making its way through the various city boards and commissions, and we really need to provide our input before the next BHNA membership meeting in April.
