BARTON CREEK GREENBELT WORK DAY
Saturday, September 25, Spyglass Trail Entry, 9:00 – 12:30

Hello Greenbelt Fans,

We all made it through the hot summer, the endangered birds completed another nesting season, and we have clearance to go after the invasive plant population again. September 25 is National Public Lands Day, and we will be celebrating this much-loved greenbelt by tending to its ecological health.

Our primary task will be to continue removing Ligustrum trees (both big-leaf Japanese Ligustrum and small-leaf Chinese Ligustrum), Nandina shrubs, and Chinaberry trees. We will have numerous teams working on this task, along both sides of the main trail from near the Spyglass entry to Campbell’s Hole. We’ll be working with crew leaders with chainsaws, to remove the largest trees, and in groups using hand saws and weed wrenches to remove the smaller plants. The downed biomass will be cut up and stacked into tight windrows, to slow any rain runoff into the creek. We will also have a group doing litter pick up along the trail and in the creek bed near the rock flats.

Thanks to the Austin Parks Foundation and an Impact Austin grant and the Hill Country Conservancy, there will also be numerous other groups working on invasives removal on the main trail by the Zilker access. And there will be a free lunch provided after the work day at Zilker Park near the Zilker access trailhead.
