GREENBELT GUARDIAN WORK DAY
SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 28 AT HOMEDALE TRAIL, 9 AM TO 1 PM

Greenbelt Fans,

We are getting back to work on the greenbelt! We have a lot of activities planned for this upcoming work day at Homedale Trail. There will also be several other activities up and down the greenbelt trail to celebrate this National Public Lands Day.

We will be making small repairs and improvements from the entry to the kiosk, and also repairing some of the trail edging along the switchback trail. As always, we will be working on invasives management – we will have a crew of Texas Corps members to work alongside us, doing the sawing and herbicide treatment – and we will need plenty of folks to organize the slash to be hauled off of the site. We have a special project to mortar in some stone sidewalls on both sides of the bridge crossing. And we need to remove some graffiti on the rock flats.

We’re looking forward to a very productive work day. We will start gathering at the entry to Homedale Trail, 2010 Homedale Drive, at 8:45, for sign-in and some fortifying breakfast tacos. Volunteers will choose their preferred activity and gather with their team leader for instructions. We provide all of the needed work tools. Bring your favorite work gloves, and please wear long pants and long sleeves – there is a healthy population of poison ivy.

Please RSVP to this email AND
sign up on the Austin Parks Foundation website at http://austinparks.org/multi-project-list.html?eventid=684&linkid=229&action=selectproject
Looking forward to having some productive fun on the trail !

Greenbelt Fans-

For those who signed up or were planning to work with the Greenbelt Guardians at the Homedale Trail this Saturday, we have determined that we would do more harm than good by working while the trail is so wet, since it already suffers from compaction. Much of this entry trail is in the shade, so it stays moist longer than areas of the trail exposed to the sun – and the arroyo where we planned to stabilize the walls with stonework still has water dripping into it .

There is another project at the 360 entry being led by Tommy Blackwell which still has openings for volunteers. They will be focusing on trail repair work. If you would like to work on that part of the greenbelt, you can sign up on the Austin Parks Foundation website.

The Hill Country Conservancy will be holding a lunch celebration at Zilker Park at 12:30 afterwards, and Barton Springs Pool entry will be free for volunteers. We hope lots of folks turn out to celebrate National Trails Day on this very special Austin trail.

Greenbelt Fans,

We hope you will help us celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Greenbelt Guardians by joining us at our upcoming work day on It’s My Park Day, Saturday, March 2, from 9 am to 1 pm!  We will be hosting volunteers at both the Homedale Trail (2010 Homedale Drive) and the Gus Fruh Trail (2642 Barton Hills Drive).

At both sites we will continue our work on invasive plant removal, minor trail repairs, and clean-up/trash removal. At Gus Fruh, work will also continue on the construction of  a retaining wall and steps by the swimming hole area.

We’re looking forward to getting back to the trail and doing our part to give back to this incredible resource right in the midst of our city. We hope you will join us.

Please RSVP directly by email if you plan to attend – we want to make sure we have plenty of Maria’s famous breakfast tacos to help get us started!

Also, please go to the website of the Austin Parks Foundation (www.austinparks.org/multi-project-list.html?eventid=567) to sign in there, so they will know how many tee shirts of what sizes to send to our work sites. Everyone who signs up and participates will get a commemorative tee shirt designed especially for this work day.

We are looking forward to seeing both lots of familiar faces and new comers – we will provide the tools, tasks, and team leaders so we can all have a productive day giving back to our greenbelt.
