Greenbelt Fans,

On Saturday, January 29, we will start our eighth year of quarterly work days on the greenbelt. I hope many of you can join us to continue the work of caring for this very special public space.

We will be working from the Homedale Entry, 2010 Homedale Drive (behind Barton Hills Elementary School), from 9:00 – 1:00. Show up in time for a breakfast taco treat provided by Barton Hills Neighborhood Association. Sign-in, choose a task, meet with your team leader, select the tools you will need, and go to work in the woods! The usual work camaraderie will begin, and at the end of the day, you will see palpable results of your efforts. In these times of high tech immersion, directly observing the fruits of your labor is a rare and treasured experience.

We will be working from the trailhead entry down to the rock flats. There is lots of weeding and “sprucing up” due at the entry area. In this dormant vegetative cycle, the evergreen invasive Ligustrum and Nandina stand out boldly, so we will go after them. We are noticing a second generation cycle, coming out of the seedbank, after our quite thorough cleaning several years ago. Fortunately, most of it can be handled with weed wrenches and hand tools, since most of the very large ones have been eliminated. We want to get these small new ones before they start their new seed cycle.

We’ve also got some trailside clearing to do, cutting back brush, removing suckers, and re-arranging and extending some windrows on a hillside. Also some bridge repair and rail repair along the trail. Always trash clean-up…

Please RSVP if you can come and work on this day. Plan to wear long sleeves, long pants, and closed-toe shoes (easier to do in the winter than summer…). It’s a good idea to bring your favorite water bottle too, to keep with you as you work. We’re looking forward to another great work day.

BARTON CREEK GREENBELT WORK DAY
Saturday, September 25, Spyglass Trail Entry, 9:00 – 12:30

Hello Greenbelt Fans,

We all made it through the hot summer, the endangered birds completed another nesting season, and we have clearance to go after the invasive plant population again. September 25 is National Public Lands Day, and we will be celebrating this much-loved greenbelt by tending to its ecological health.

Our primary task will be to continue removing Ligustrum trees (both big-leaf Japanese Ligustrum and small-leaf Chinese Ligustrum), Nandina shrubs, and Chinaberry trees. We will have numerous teams working on this task, along both sides of the main trail from near the Spyglass entry to Campbell’s Hole. We’ll be working with crew leaders with chainsaws, to remove the largest trees, and in groups using hand saws and weed wrenches to remove the smaller plants. The downed biomass will be cut up and stacked into tight windrows, to slow any rain runoff into the creek. We will also have a group doing litter pick up along the trail and in the creek bed near the rock flats.

Thanks to the Austin Parks Foundation and an Impact Austin grant and the Hill Country Conservancy, there will also be numerous other groups working on invasives removal on the main trail by the Zilker access. And there will be a free lunch provided after the work day at Zilker Park near the Zilker access trailhead.

Please sign up to work with the Greenbelt Guardians on this work day, Saturday, September 25, from 9:00 – 12:30. We will have a sign-in table at the Spyglass Trail entry, at the corner of Barton Skyway and Spyglass Drive. RSVP to this invitation, and ALSO sign-up on the Austin Parks Foundation website, to get counted for the free lunch.

Greenbelt Fans,

The creek is flowing! And we need more hands on deck for our work day this Saturday at the Homedale Trail. Come celebrate Halloween with us as we spook the weeds and invasives and organize some windrows, lay some stepping stones, and clean out the trash. RSVP soon so we can order enough Maria’s tacos treats to get us started.

Costumes welcome! We’ve got the supplies and tools, we need the hands and hearts.

Location: Homedale Entry, 2010 Homedale, behind Barton Hills Elementary School
Time: 9 am – 1 pm

Thanks, look forward to working with you.
